Berlin Carnival 2013: Soca Twins Interview
We talk to Franky Fyah out of the Soca Twins
1. Soca Twins. Explain who you are, where you are from, what you do and how long you have been doing it.
Franky: We are Soca Twins from Berlin. Soca Twins was founded in 2002. We are Boone Chatta (MC) and me Franky Fyah (Dj), better known as ‘The German Soca Ambassadors’. We are THE sound when it comes to Soca and entertainment with intl’ awards and a lot of nominations.
2. What is it about soca that you love so much?
Franky: The fire, energy, vibes, carnival, culture and the people.
3. You are well known to the global soca community. How many different countries have you played in? How many different carnivals (globally) have you attended?
Franky: We played in more than 15 countries and attended over 10 Caribbean carnivals. We are addicted and definitely they will be more to come!
4. What makes Berlin Carnival unique compared to any other carnivals?
Franky: The Carnival of Cultures (Karneval der Kulturen) shows the world that people from 180 different cultures not only live together in this city, but they also respect each other and celebrate together. We are a big family.
5. You are supporter of the Mas Band Carnival Explosion? Can you tell us all about this collaboration?
Franky: We are strong supporters of Carnival Explosion for many years. As carnival lovers we respect their passion for Mas which is made with love and hard work. I also appreciate the veterans on their team who are longtime Mas Makers for Peter Minshall in Trinidad and organized the first Soca truck on de road when the Carnival in Berlin was born- wow, thats actually 18 years ago!
6. For years ‘Carnival Jump Up’ is always the big opening party for Berlin Carnival. What is the line-up for this year? Do you have any other events on the weekend?
Franky: This year on Friday may 17th at club ‘Gretchen’ for the first time in Germany we proudly present Live on stage Peter Ram from Barbados, also for the first time in Germany DJ Barrie Hype from Miami, Jammasters from Holland, Lou Weed, Soca Twins from Berlin and special guests. Saturday may 18th, we have a big costume pick-up lime with many DJs at Club Yaam with plenty Caribbean food and rum punch! Sunday may 19th, we on d road with Carnival Explosion !
7. What are the Soca Twins plan for the future?
Franky: Our Mission is not completed. We never stop to bring Soca to another level and spreading the culture globally.
8.When will you be gracing the shores of the UK with your presents?
Franky: We are planing to come over for NHC 2013! We cannot talk about yet but stay tuned!
