Trinidad Carnival 2014: Jouvert – Coco Devils 3rd March

J’ouvert. PARTY ON DE ROAD…

Wikipedia description:
J’ouvert is a large street party during Carnival in the eastern Caribbean region. J’ouvert is a contraction of the French jour ouvert, or dawn/day break.

Without a doubt my favourite part of carnival. I love the dark. I love the freedom. I love the carefreeness that j’ouvert brings. The vibe is unlike any other.

There is a lot of history behind j’ouvert which I’ll go into at another time. For now you just need to know that it is the official start of carnival. It happens in the early hours of Monday morning. The plan is to get as dirty as possible using oil, paint, mud, chocolate and anything that leaves a mess. When everyone dirty, no one cares about their appearance. As ‘looking good’ is no longer a concern, its all about letting go and having a great time.

For this j’ouvert, I was in a band called Coco Devils. As the name suggest the mess we got into was of a chocolate nature (right up our street). There were 1000+ people, 4 music trucks and 4 drinks trucks. Music was blasting, drinks were flowing and the bacchanal become more and more crazy.

Cooc devils, you guys pulled off a great j’ouvert. The band was safe and the drinks were non-stop. It was a great way to start carnival.
